2016 Tune Tourney Round 1: Minneapolis

The fourth and final region to be featured in 2016’s Tune Tournament is Minneapolis, whose music scene is perhaps best known one of its most famous residents, Prince Rogers Nelson, known to the world simply as Prince.

Minneapolis’ most storied music venue, First Avenue, built its legacy in the 1980’s, when bands like The Replacements and Hüsker Dü made the Twin Cities the epicenter of a rock revolution, the effects of which rippled out into Seattle in the 90’s, and throughout the country in the decades to follow. But First Avenue will also be eternally linked to Prince; this is the club featured in Purple Rain, and this seemed to be the one place – after Paisley Park – that the artist could call home.
