I’ve decided to subject myself to 31 days of horror films for the month of October. It will be a mix of rewatching stuff I haven’t seen in a while and brand new things. Day 10:
BODY PARTS (1991) – dir. Eric Red
I was riding on a high streak of enjoying 9 movies in a row but I knew that couldn’t last. Thanks for ruining that, BODY PARTS.
The movie manages to mess up the classic premise of a person getting in an accident, losing a body part (in this case an arm), and getting it replaced with that of a murderer. Usually this drives the individual to become like the killer and commit murder. Here? He gets in a bar fight and punches his young son in the face (okay that made me laugh). He doesn’t get the graphic murder dreams beside once and it isn’t even that bad! If the premise is that hokey, you gotta have fun with it or make it creepy as hell. The film does neither and instead produces an hour of lifeless story.
This movie is 86 minutes long and stuff doesn’t even start happening until the last 26 minutes. The pacing is horrible and I was falling asleep almost immediately. Only redeeming aspect is that the last part does get pretty weird. The body of the killer is trying to reform itself. This leads to s a fun chase scene and limbs blowing up limbs. That and Brad Douriff showing up for no reason are only saving graces for me. You’d do better to just avoid it. Watch MAD LOVE if you want a good version of this story.
