I’ve decided to subject myself to 31 days of horror films for the month of October. It will be a mix of rewatching stuff I haven’t seen in a while and brand new things. Day 25:
BLOOD AND BLACK LACE (1964) – dir. Mario Bava
Many cite this film as one of the birth films of the giallo genre and after the fiasco of THE SNOWMAN, I needed something good. Bava is one of the master of the genre and he shows exactly why with this film. The set designs and lighting are gorgeous. The seem otherworldly and the murders that happen in them seem to fill them out.
Like most giallo, plot is incidental to the bigger picture. You come to watch people die in crazy ways with a good score behind it and this film soundly delivers in that aspect. If you have ever been curious about the genre, this is for sure a great starting place in both historical content and quality.
