Hiatus Kaiyote – Choose Your Weapon
I like all the disparate parts — all the cool, funky neo-soul ingredients are there, but what it adds up to is ultimately underwhelming. Vocalist Nai Palm can do those drawn-out “ooooooooohs” and “ahhhhhhhs” with the best of them (and on more than a few cuts here, that’s pretty much all she does), but it all seems a little dry (baby-makin’ music should sound moist) and pre-fab. Maybe they should invite Donnie Trumpet to their party.
